The Garden of Gethsemane

Matthew 26: 36,38-39, 42 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” (38) Then He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me, yet not as I will, but as Thou Wilt…..” (42) He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Thy will be done.”

Jesus isn’t only our example in leading others by serving them, but is also our example in obeying His Father. We see him vulnerable and anxious. The account in Mark 14:34 says He told Peter, James and John, “My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.” He knows He’s about to suffer a great deal physically and spiritually (all the sins of the world will be placed upon Him and He’s beaten almost to death). It’s something He’d rather not do, yet He submits to the Father and is obedient to the plan, knowing His death and resurrection is the only hope for mankind. How much more willing should we be to obey the will of God in our lives if Jesus was willing to die for us?  John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus showed loved for his Father with His obedience and love for us by His death.

Activity: Play Simon Says or Mother May I to practice obedience.
