The Helper

John 14:15, 16, 24-26 If you love me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever…He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me. These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

There seems to be a real link between faith and obedience. Jesus says He knows we love Him if we obey His commandments. Notice that our love for God comes first and then the obedience. And how do we know His commandments?  By reading the Bible. But He doesn’t stop there. If you keep reading in the same passage, He tells the disciples He will send them a Helper called the Holy Spirit who will teach them and help them remember God’s word. The Holy Spirit is also the one who helps us keep God’s commandments. We can decide to keep them on our own, but will eventually fail. When we call on the Holy Spirit, He helps us keep God’s commandments on a daily basis. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you each day.

Activity:
Fill a laundry basket with a stack of books too heavy for one child to carry (with older children you might need to get creative). Have each child try to lift the basket. When they can’t do it alone, offer to help them. Lift it together. Explain that keeping God’s commandments on our own is impossible. The Holy Spirit helps us with our load and enables us to keep God’s commandments.
