Fourth Saturday – Almsgiving
James 1:27 This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father, to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
Isaiah 58:10 And if you give yourself to the hungry, and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, Then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom will become like midday.
Almsgiving Activity: Set up a change jar in the kitchen. Put spare change in it at the end of each day. When it’s full, donate it anonymously to a local charity. Let the kids decorate the jar to be something meaningful and fun.
With older children: Take some time to plan a service project that you can complete on the sixth Saturday of our 40-day journey. This will be the Saturday before Palm Sunday. There are plenty of needs in your local community and around the world. Here are some ideas to get you started: volunteer at a local children’s hospital to hold babies or play with children while the parents take a break; sing hymns at an nursing home; take a meal to a shut-in from your church and sit and talk awhile; take bag lunches to homeless people on your local streets (make sure the food is soft as many of them don’t have all their teeth); do a fundraising campaign to raise money for a well in an impoverished area overseas as a symbol of the Living Water we find in Christ. You can do this through organizations like World Vision or Charity Water. )
