Undefeated…so far

April 20, 2009/Miscellaneous

Last night my brother-in-law and sister came over to hang out. They coach a high school basketball team in Pennsylvania.  Wanting to be in the conversation, I mentioned I heard Kevin Garnett was out for the playoffs. Henry was shocked and said (after closing his dropped jaw), “Where’d you hear that?”

“What? You’re surprised I know that?” I said.
“I didn’t know that. ” said my b-i-l. “Me either.” said my sister.
“I’m just wondering what show you’re watching that would say that…” Henry said.
Laughing I say, “I’m not telling you. It doesn’t matter.”
“Come on, tell me. Where’d you hear it.” Henry said.
I could hardly get the words out of my mouth I was laughing so hard…”NPR.”
I got no respect after that!! (And it’s true – I really heard it Saturday on my way back from the hospital on NPR. Thank God they had a sports recap… too bad I couldn’t pull off casually dropping the information.)
However, tonight, (cue “We are the Champions”) Triple Threat resurfaced. You may remember us from last year even though we went by Independent 3. Thank you, Bridget, for being on top of your game this year and actually thinking up a name. Yes, Indy 3/Triple Threat is back for the Loudoun County Women’s Basketball League. Can I get a WhoopWhoop?
And, thanks to wonderful recruiting in the off season – yes the off season when we should’ve been doing drills and shooting the ball every day, we were busy recruiting younger legs still on top of their game. I mean, if there is one skill a woman never loses, it is being able to pick up the phone and call someone.
Said sister above and another young player joined our team and literally carried us tonight. Just to give you an idea, our 4/5 player said to young player, “What year were you born?”
Young player responded, “1990”. 4/5 chuckled and said, “The last time I played was 1989!”
That being said, I am glad I decided to play. I really debated playing – I’m 8 wks out from having a c-section and in case you forgot, I have a baby in the hospital. I wasn’t sure I’d have time for something like this. But, I decided it would be healthy for me to have an hour a week where all I think about is having fun. And, I’m sure after a few ibuprofen and a rub down, I’ll look back on tonight as a ton of fun.
