Sweet potato, sweet potato, sweet potato pie

April 27, 2010/Ryan
Four days ago I had the bright idea to see if Ryan would accept water from a medicine dropper. Ever since his Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) in April he has refused food. He became very defensive about his mouth and getting anything food related near it. We started back at square one with non-demand mouth play. He finally let me put my fingers all through his mouth.
Four days ago he accepted water from the medicine dropper.
Three days ago he accepted milk from the medicine dropper. Two days ago he got angry when he saw me pour his milk into the feeding bag without letting him taste any.
He is also eating baby food as evidenced by this EMPTY jar of sweet potatoes.

Before I was practically forcing Ryan to eat three of the tiniest bites of food. It took Ryan three feedings to eat that jar of sweet potatoes. THREE FEEDINGS!

The first day I gave him about 20 ccs of milk and a tablespoon of food and called it a day. The second day I let him eat until he threw up. How was I supposed to know he would just keep eating? I made a note of how much he ate that day and make sure to give him less than that now. I forgot his little tummy is only big enough to take a full feed over two hours.
I’m not sure what happened in that brain of his, but he suddenly wants and likes food. And he’s taking it in (Ryan) epic proportions. He averages 1.5 tbsp of food and 30-40 ccs of milk in a sitting. For awhile there, I thought this feeding tube was going to be here forever. Now, there is light at the end of the tunnel. We still have a long way to go, but we’ll be getting there faster now that he’s actually accepting food.
Do you know how long I’ve waited to wipe food off his face?

He looks good in everything he eats! LOL I am glad he is liking and even demanding a taste of some foods. Big steps for the lil man! Congrats on being able to wipe his chubby little face.
    Love to all.

    That is awesome news…
Karsie only recently got excited about food as well… directly following her stomach virus?!? I think all the pedialyte and weight loss made her hungry and she decided that by mouth is faster than by tube (and more gratifying)!!

    Yay for Ryan eating!

Oh I am so glad he is eating now. I hope it just keeps getting better and that before long he won’t need the feeding tube.

I had been gone and I didn’t know how he was doing and if he had completly gotten over his tummy and bowel upsets (virus?) Glad he is better.

John and I prayed for him this morning.

And we pray for God’s grace for you and Henry… Leighann.

    Love, Linda @ Truthful Tidbits
