Surgery Update – Number Two

August 27, 2009/Ryan

Ryan is out of surgery! We expect to see him in the next twenty minutes or so. Here is what we know so far:
~ He did very well in the surgery. The cardiac surgeon was able to perform the bi-lateral Glenn as planned WITHOUT using the by-pass machine. This means Ryan’s body does not have to recover from having his blood pass out of his body and through a machine and then back into his body (bypassing his heart) and then adjust to doing the process again by itself. This is great news.
~ The shunt that was placed back in March was closed off. There was talk of leaving it open since Ryan’s pulmonary arteries are so small. It would give him increased blood flow resulting in higher O2 sats. The risk would have been increased pressure in the PAs and lungs which long-term can have negative affects. So, Praise God! Ryan didn’t require his shunt to keep his sats up. He was satting around 80 when the surgeon came to talk to us.
~ In some instances, the surgeon will leave the incision open for up to a week to give the heart room while it is swollen to calm down after the surgery. Ryan’s heart tolerated the procedure so well they were able to close the incision site.
~ The disappointing news is that they held off any anatomical repair (the ectopia cordis and omphalocele). They feel Ryan needs time to adjust to the Glenn rewiring before introducing another site for the body to heal. They will perform that procedure separately as soon as the end of next week. It is all dependent on how Ryan’s body recovers over the next few days.

Thank you so much for praying for Ryan. We are happy the surgery went so well. Please pray that he continues to recover without any hiccups including infection.

Praise the Lord again and again. I am tearing up as I read all the people who are giving praise to the Lord. He deserves it and Ryan has inspired a lot of people to praise the Lord God of heaven, the maker of everything and everyone. I am quite struck by the built in “bypass system” that God gave Ryan when He formed him. With two pulmanary arteries instead of one, they could take turns doing the work while the other was undergoing its surgery. Is this correct? Thank you for your timely update to the blog. We were ALL eager to hear the news, but none of us wanted to bother you during a stressful time. I am still praying and thanking God for what He has done in Ryan’s short 6-month life. I love you all….Mom
