Natalie is a typical first child – loves to be in charge, every toy is hers to decide who gets to play with what, and always has to have the biggest of anything being halved – even though I explained halves are equal… more than once.

I worried about Ainsley at first wondering if she would be hen-pecked and unable to stand up for herself. Believe me, I didn’t have to worry long. She is strong-willed. However, in most regards she is also pretty laid back and doesn’t feel entitled to anything!
The girls tend to play wonderfully together, but there are moments of crying and gnashing of teeth. I am so not ready for junior high!
Lately though, I’m seeing real growth in how Natalie is treating her little sister. While she continues managing more than she should and pouting when she doesn’t get her way, I’m seeing her sacrificing and serving on a more regular basis. When they are separated at night due to talking and playing, Natalie volunteers to go in the lesser-desired bed. And when they go out to the swing set, I see her pumping for her little sister who has yet to figure out this wonderful law of physics on her own.
It brings me much joy.

A sister’s love for her sister is beautiful! My girls have it. It warms my heart every time I see my older daughter grab the hand of her little sister to keep her safe or to see my younger daughter grab the hand of her older sister just because.

Here’s how to successfully cut things in half: one of the 2 children has the privilege to cut the item into the 2 pieces, the other child gets first pick. It ends most of the drama and you’ll never believe the accuracy something can be converted into 2 very equal halves. And you stand back blameless 🙂
