Ryan’s Fontan – Day 2

July 2, 2015/Ryan

The plan as of last night was to extubate as soon as possible, but if you’ve ever been in an ICU, you know plans change frequently. The team decided to leave him on the vent overnight since he’s such a complex case and work to wean him off sometime this afternoon. They ended up pulling the vent tube this morning after rounds when Ryan sat up straight in the bed and decided he was pretty much over having something stuck down his throat and taped across his face. They were about to prepare him for a trial run anyway and decided to see if he would fly on his own, sans trial flight.

So far, so good.

He still has some pain meds on board that are keeping him in and out of consciousness.  When he wakes, he’s pretty upset about all the lines coming from his body and the fact that he hasn’t been allowed to drink anything yet. We hope to start clear liquids later on today.

Henry and I are holding up. I’m tired physically and emotionally, but am ready for the long-haul.

Specific prayers for today:

1. There is still a chance of clotting in the fenestration shunt in his Fontan. We are praying it won’t become an issue. The first 48 hours seem to be the most critical and we are around the 24 hour mark now.

2. There is some fluid on the right side of Ryan’s body under his lung. Please pray that the body reabsorbs it naturally and it doesn’t become an issue.

3. His chest tube drainage is looking typical. Please pray his body will taper off in making fluid so that he’ll be able to get the tubes removed. They will probably be with us for the week, but I’m praying it won’t be too long as they are uncomfortable.

4. Pray for Ryan’s pain level. They are keeping him as comfortable as possible.

Overall, Ryan’s numbers look great for one-day post-op. He is doing remarkably well. Please pray he continues to heal quickly without complications.
