Playing catch up…

August 25, 2009/Ainsley

Friday I took the day off. By that I mean I didn’t go to the hospital. Instead, we stayed home and acted like normal people. Not that we’re not normal…. um. Well…okay…moving on.

We made sugar cookies for a friend who had a baby. We were trying to spell the baby’s name and I broke the S. I said to the girls, “We need to make another S because I broke it.”
“That’s okay.” Natalie said. “I’ll eat it. Don’t worry.”
Later on, I proceeded to break another letter and said, “We need another E, guys.”
Natalie said acting exasperated, “Mommm, I can’t eat all the broken letters!”

While wrapping the gift for said friend’s baby, I took the opportunity to teach the girls about gift giving. I said, “Girls, whenever you are giving someone a gift, it is important…” I paused concentrating on getting the price tag off the gift. I was going to finish with …important to think about what the person likes.  However, before I could get the words out of my mouth Natalie finished my sentence by saying, “important to get those little stickers off?

Saturday after visiting Ryan we headed to the zoo. Again, it felt great to be a normal family, doing normal activities, outside…running around instead of cooped up in a little room. The girls loved it. When I told the girls to get their shoes on this morning to get ready to see Ryan Ainsley said, “Are we going to the zoo?”

Today, we visited Ryan in the morning and then headed to the pediatrician for the girls’ school health screenings. Natalie had to get shots. Boo hoo! She was not happy at all. She said, “Take pictures for daddy.” So here they are:

…playing the part.

… forgetting she was hurt so smiling for the camera instead.

We happened to pass the Fractured Prune, a fresh donut shop I read about on a friend’s blog. I stopped on a whim and we got two donuts to split. Um, it was awesome. I wanted to eat a dozen more donuts on the spot. Good thing the girls were there forcing me to be a good example. Here is Ainsley enjoying the outing:

“Take a picture of my dirty fingers, mommy!”
(Hake a hic-her of my hirty hingers, mommy)

The diva at her best!

And finally, here is Ryan looking at his mirror. He loves it. If he’s awake when I leave I like to set him up with his “friend“.

Oh, we used to get up early and wait in line outside the first Fractured Prune in Ocean City MD when we were teens… there was always a long line! I loved that place. Would you believe they opened one here in Charlotte about a year ago? I couldn’t believe it! All I can say is YUMMY!
I love that you got to be “normal” it sounds like it was grand! The zoo is a great place to go and be silly and have fun with the kids!

Your girls are precious! Ainsley could pass as Sarah’s, they look so much alike 😉

Is Ryan not sedated anymore? Praying for the upcoming Glenn procedure.

Ryan is under slight sedation – really just two (or three, i can’t remember now) narcotics that take the edge off. They up his doses if he is agitated, which then knocks him out. But if he is having a good day, he is able to interact with us some. Just not the same as if he were off the vent and not on meds.

I wish you lived near by, I would go when you couldn’t be there and spend some cuddle time with Ryan. Love him up.

Who in the world would come up with a name like “Fractured Prune” for a donut shop??? I’t hilarious!!!

Your girls always crack me up with the funny stuff they say. The gift giving story reminds me of a Christmas when my mil was giving a long speech on the meaning of Christmas and said “Just remember, it’s the getting, not the giving”. Everyone was real quiet and I wasn’t going to say a word since I was just an in law. However, when she repeated it again, verbatim, we all had to crack up.
