Living in La-la-land.

September 23, 2011/Ryan

I was saying to someone the other day that Ryan is like any other toddler. We don’t have that much out-of-the-ordinary that we do for him.

“What kind of care does he require?” was the question.
“I give him meds at 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., that’s it,” was my reply.
I meant it. In comparison to the care Ryan required even a few months ago when he still had his feeding tube, these days are pretty easy-peasy.
Then I took note of what goes on around here. Like what really goes on….. Even though we no longer have three to four therapy sessions a week; or weekly or monthly doctor appointments; or feeding tube sites to clean; or round the clock meds; or oxygen companies to call; or feeding supply companies to contact; Ryan still has physical therapy once a week, meds twice a day, and this week I had two phone calls or more a day regarding his care. Granted several of these are because we just moved. BUT, what it tells me is that he’s not a normal two-year-old.
I guess it’s just so much easier than before that it feels like there’s nothing left I have to do for him. Or maybe I’m getting used to all the admin work it takes to keep up with his insurance, therapy, doctor appointments, and medicines. Either way, he’s not your average two-year-old.

Such a coincidence that you wrote this because I was just thinking yesterday about Ryan and how he appears to be like any other healthy 2 year old. Other than his meds and drs. appts, is he still hitting all the normal milestones of a 2 year old? He sure is cute and he looks so happy and healthy. At the end of the day, that is all that really matters.

@Wendy: He is hitting his milestones pretty well. He is caught up on speech… his gross motor skills are still his weakest point. He still walks like an early walker even though he’s been walking since February. He was assessed at around 24 months instead of 30 months by his PT last week.

This is your normal now and you run a tight ship. You don’t think twice about it you just do what needs to be done. Many others would be overwhelmed completly at what you “USED” to have to do. You have a great attitude, you are positive and outgoing. You are just as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside, fearfully and wonderfully made you are blessed!

He’s NOT your normal 2 yr old, he’s the MIRACULOUS two yr old! I’m A.M.A.Z.E.D. at what God has done with/for him. I look at him in your pictures, and he really does look like your pretty average two yr old. He’s got quite the *sparkle* of mischief in his eye too!

Henry…Thanks so much for the update on Ryan. I bet he will catch up on his gross motor skills within the next year. He has come so far this past year. He truly is a miracle boy!!

It will be great to see what kind of progress he makes in the coming year. To me he is a little walking miracle…and I am so glad that he has come so far. You deserve to feel like he is a normal little two year old…because you have gone through so much! I think you are a terrific mom!

    Love, Linda
