how to start seeds

May 30, 2013/From the Garden

This one is pretty self-explanatory, but one I didn’t think of it until this year. I’ve always been tempted to buy those prepackaged seed-starting trays with the discs of peat moss and the little compartments all lined up in a neat grid. I typically see them about the time I’m sick of winter and really wanting to start my garden. The few times I’ve bought them, they’ve sat in my garage until I pass them along to a friend.

This year, I spontaneously bought some seeds from the grocery store only to find I didn’t have any seed trays. In looking around my garage, I came up with this solution….

egg cartons

This was so easy I had the kids do it for me. They filled each pod with potting soil and planted three seeds in each one. To get the maximum return you could set the plants up with sun lamps for like 16 hours a day, but I just stuck them all in front of the sunniest window I have and watered them faithfully. About 50% of them came up.

As we went to plant them, the soil was pretty lose and in some cases, the roots had started to grow through the carton so I just tore off individual pods and planted them in the carton. The egg carton will eventually break down and, voila, the roots weren’t damaged in the process.

Have you ever started your garden from seeds?
