Home Again, home again, jiggity jig…

May 24, 2010/Ryan

Ryan is home! He was cranky on Sunday morning, but turned a corner Sunday early evening when he was suddenly his happy self again.

He spent his time in the hospital hanging out with mom…

Driving his car…
Pulling off his pulse ox probe…
And studying it!
This by far was the easiest procedure we’ve ever done. Ryan has always been on a ventilator going into and coming out of his caths. This time, he was vented for the procedure and extubated directly afterward. After going through the results, Dr. K ended by saying, “Okay, Ryan will be in the PACU for a few hours and then back to the floor. He should be able to leave tomorrow.” I had a few questions: What is the PACU? The floor instead of the ICU, you sure? And, leave tomorrow, really?!
Turns out the PACU is the post-anesthesia care unit, a fancy name for recovery room. Through 5 surgeries and 5 prior caths, Ryan has never visited the recovery room – he’s never been stable enough. He’s always headed straight to the ICU. Turns out the PACU is in the same place where I was prepped and came back to when I had my c-section. Walking through that hall and seeing the exact room where I was 15 months ago made my stomach fill with butterflies. It took me back to the day I had Ryan – all the nerves and anxiety. I almost got nauseous the butterflies were so strong. It’s amazing how emotions are so tied to our memories.
Ryan arrived back on the floor an hour and half later where we spent the next two days. He was good enough to leave on Friday, but Dr. D wanted to change one of his meds – twice. This med affects blood pressures and it’s better to be under supervision during the change. So we stayed for observation. Then, Ryan spiked a temp on Saturday so they observed him another 8 hours to see if there was anything serious brewing. We finally loaded up and left at 9:15 p.m. to come home. I am amazed by how well the hospitalization went, but truly thankful.
I leave you with these out takes:
“Mom, seriously, I’m cuter than that camera!”
“Gotcha!”
