I hope they’re ready for us…

Last week our neighborhood had a Halloween parade – a full week before the actual holiday. We did not attend. Listen, between parties at school and actual day-of trick or treating, this mama cannot handle a whole other day of getting kids dressed up and collecting candy. Before you think my neighborhood was at fault, take a deep breath. They weren’t alone. Many neighborhoods in our area had parades complete with fire trucks and marching bands. Yes, marching bands. It is a celebration after all.

I was going to tell you where Halloween originated, just for the sake of throwing in some facts, but I just went to wikipedia and am still confused as to whether we are supposed to be remembering the dead with fellow Christians or celebrating the end of the harvest with the Celts so forgetaboutit.

Instead, let’s talk candy. Every year I buy a little bag of candy to give out to trick or treaters…. we definitely have more of them in this neighborhood than anywhere we’ve lived before. Being that we start the night out with our kids, we miss the littlest ones of them and only have to contend with the more grown up middle schoolers and high schoolers who come around after dark. I go back and forth buying candy I like and candy I hate…. candy I like in case some is left over. Candy I hate so that in case there is leftovers, I won’t eat them. When I do buy candy I hate, I end up getting mad at myself for doing it because then I’m forced, forced I tell you, to consume candy that is less than sub par.

This year I made sure the bag I bought contains miniature Snickers, because everyone knows a Snickers really satisfies ya. What I didn’t realize is that it contains these:

This is the marriage of peanut butter cups with Butterfinger candy bars and it really is a match made in heaven. I like Butterfingers but have steered away from them in recent years due to their crumbly, messy nature. Now, I can have the flavor I enjoy with the smooth, creamy and therefore non-messy nature of a peanut butter cup. Yes, please.

Besides Butterfinger Cups I’m also looking forward to tonight for a few other reasons, none of which have to do with the rain and cold weather that’s in the forecast. No, I’m looking forward to the return of two of my favorite people in the world… Henry and Natalie. They are done galavanting around Asia and are on their way home. Whoot, whoot! The other kids voted to do limited time trick or treating in order to be able to pick them up at the airport.   I hope security is ready for this gang (a vampire princess (don’t even ask), Batman, and Captain Stinker) – –
