Extreme Makeover – A summary

September 2, 2009/Ryan

Ryan is out of surgery and back in his room. He looks uh-may-zing!!

A few things:
~ Ryan’s diaphragm is intact. The doctors thought he had a herniated diaphragm due to the placement of his omphalocele in relation to his heart; however, when they opened him up they found his diaphragm muscle is complete and needs no repair. This is awesome news for us.

~ Ryan’s body tolerated the abdomen repair well so they went forward with the ectopia cordis repair and had enough skin to pull over his chest cavity. He’s stitched up all the way from his missing belly button to his chin. 🙂

~ Ryan looks great post-op; tomorrow we may see some swelling and bruising, but right now he looks like a new kid. Removing the tissue expanders alone gave him a whole new look.

The doctors are very excited with the outcome of Ryan’s surgery. Everyone keeps telling us what a great job he did and how great he looks. As soon as I can upload my pictures, I will.

Excellent news for Ryan! I’m curious, so forgive me if you’ve already talked about this, but in order to put the heart back in the right place, did Ryan have all the proper bones in place?

I’ve just recently started following your story, and have a hard time ‘putting my head’ around everything!
