40-day Easter Journey 3

Jesus is the Word

John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

John calls Jesus – The Word. Not only was He in the beginning (think Gen. 1:1 – In the beginning….) but He was also present and helped at creation because Jesus is God…. “the Word was with God and the Word was God.”

When we think of the scripture, “man shall not live by bread alone” and how Eve so easily questioned the words of God, it reminds us that Jesus is the Word – He is the one who sustains us and guides us.

Activity: Make the name of Jesus with Popsicle Sticks.  Parental supervision required. TIPS: I noticed it works better if you use all the same color sticks. Hot glue is very forgiving. If you don’t get your sticks together before it dries, peel it off and start again. Also I really had to show my sticks who was boss when cutting them.

1) Using a glue gun, glue two Popsicle sticks into a line by overlapping them end-to-end (do this twice so you have two lines)

2) Cut three Popsicle sticks in half so you have six equal pieces. Glue them down making sections, starting with one edge and ending with the other.  There should be five total sections when you’re done.  The first section can be a little narrower than the other four. (One section for each letter in the name Jesus.)

3) Cut 4 more Popsicle sticks into pieces as demonstrated below.

4) Glue smaller pieces as demonstrated below to form the name Jesus in the “white” space.

Ask children what word they see… JESUS is the word!

My 4-year-old was having trouble seeing “Jesus” until we held it up to a light and saw the shadow against the wall. Now there’s a light of the world object lesson for you! On another note we had leftover crescent rolls from Wednesday for supper and before I knew it the same 4-year-old had gobbled his up and said,”Huh. There was no paper in mine this time.” Uh oh…
