Obedience and Faith

John 14:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”

This verse brings up obedience first and then love. It’s interesting because just a few verses beforehand in the passage start the opposite way. It’s almost like “what came first, the chicken or the egg?” The love or the obedience?  We are not saved through our good works but by the grace of God (Titus 3:5-7). But what if I told you we do in fact need to do something to be saved? The Bible talks about it in many verses (Romans 10:13 – Call on the name of Jesus and thou shall be saved; John 3:16 – …whoever believes on Him shall be saved)

We must obey the call of God on our lives. Faith in and of itself is an act of obedience. When we obey the call of God, He reveals Himself to us and we come into relationship with Him. When we come into relationship with Him, we want to obey Him more so we obey His commandments. It becomes one big continuous cycle. Because believe me, obeying His call on your life is not the end of what God will ask of you. You may face many temptations or difficulties in life and you will need to obey God. If you do, He will reveal more and more of Himself to you and you will find yourself in a deeper relationship with Him.

Activity:  Play the traditional trust game to show faith and obedience are related.

1. Have the child stand in front of you with his back to you.

2. On your command, have the child fall backward, trusting you will catch him.

3. Catch him!
