40-day Easter Journey 2

The Fall

Genesis 3:1-7; 24 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, Indeed, has God said, “You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?” and the woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, “You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.” And the serpent said to the woman, “You surely shall not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. So He (God) drove man out; and at the east of the Garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every direction, to guard the way to the tree of life.

Long before Satan twisted God’s words to tempt Jesus, He successfully convinced Eve into  doing exactly what God had commanded her not to do dooming us all to have a sinful nature. Romans 5:12 says, “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned –“ and Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

The sin of the first man and woman brought physical and spiritual death to us all.  And unfortunately, Romans 6:23 tells us exactly what God warned in the garden “The wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Jesus, the Son part of God, came to earth to pay the debt owed for our sins. His death on the cross fulfilled the punishment for everyone’s sin and his resurrection defeated death for us.

Activity: Drop a drop of blue food coloring into a glass of water. Watch as it slowly spreads throughout the water. Stir.  Talk about how one drop of sin poisoned the whole world.
