Natalie has been asking for a job for at least a year now. She’s made up neighborhood fliers advertising odd jobs (pulling weeds, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, etc.) since last year, at least. It may have been the summer before.
When we walk into stores that have a “hiring now!” sign, she often asks if she can apply. I have to remind her she needs to be 14 for people to officially hire her.
Several weeks ago we were at a park play date with two of Ryan’s friends. Natalie mentioned to their moms that she is a mommy’s helper and would love to help them out. One of them actually took her up on the offer! The little boy gets dropped at our house for a few hours on Thursday nights. I appreciate this mother’s willingness to encourage my daughter in her endeavors. And I love that I can supervise her on her first job and teach her as she goes. Last night was the second week and Natalie did great. She’s so excited about the whole thing. It’s Ryan’s friend so Ryan often joins in the fun of playing games, going outside to ride bikes or kick a ball, or read a story.
She came home yesterday from school with some books she’d borrowed from her school library specifically for “little kids”, as she put it. She said she chose some she liked when she was small. Here she is showing them off.
Can you tell she’s having fun?
